About this experience
From the picturesque Christiania Square – with its famous fountain “Hansken” – we continue to the 700-year-old Akershus Fortress, which offers one of Oslo’s most iconic views of the fjord. The tour ends with a visit to the beautiful Hovedøya, also called the Monastery Island.
At the meeting point the "Hansken" at Christiania Torv we go back in time to the year 1624 when the Danish Norwegian King, Christian IV, pointed to the ground and said: "here the city should be!" You will hear the story about the renaissance city, Christiania, before we continue into the Fortress to explore how Akershus, originally built as a medieval royal castle, was rebuilt into a Renaissance castle surrounded by a bastion fortress. From the fortress, the tour continues to the idyllic island landscape of Hovedøya with its monastery ruins and beautiful beaches. We then return to Aker Brygge, where the tour ends.

Wear comfortable shoes (we will be walking on cobblestones inside the fortress) and dress according to the weather. The ferry ticket is not included, but you can use a standard Ruter ticket purchased via the Ruter app. The crossing to Hovedøya from Aker Brygge takes about 10 minutes each way. You can sit either inside or out on the deck, but you might want to bring an extra jacket.
