Step inside Kronborg Castle, the legendary setting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Explore its royal halls, discover why this fortress guarded the narrow Øresund strait, enjoy views of nearby Sweden, and hear stories of kings, cannons and Danish legends.
Leave Copenhagen behind and enjoy a scenic drive to Kronborg Castle, one of Denmark's greatest treasures. Along the way, I'll introduce you to the fascinating history of the castle and the tragic story of Hamlet, Shakespeare's timeless masterpiece.
At Kronborg, we'll discover why this magnificent fortress was built at the narrowest point of the Øresund Strait, admire breathtaking views of Sweden just across the water, and see historic 17th- and 18th-century cannons that once defended this strategic passage. We'll also explore models showing how the fortress evolved into the impressive Renaissance castle we see today.
Inside the castle, we'll walk through magnificent halls filled with royal history, legends, traditions and dramatic stories. We'll descend into the mysterious underground casemates, where soldiers once lived and prisoners were held, and, if open, climb one of the towers for spectacular panoramic views over the charming town of Helsingør—an inspiring setting for generations of poets, painters and artists.
During the summer, we may even encounter Hamlet and the other famous characters who bring Shakespeare's story to life within the castle walls.
