What is a Certified Guide?

Every guide on Keyguides Connect is a certified professional tourist guide — not a freelancer, not a local enthusiast, but someone who has completed formal training and holds an official license or certification recognised in their country or region.

What certified means

A certified tourist guide has passed an accredited education programme covering local history, culture, art, and heritage. In many countries, the title is legally protected: only guides who hold the correct license are permitted to lead tours in certain sites, museums, or protected areas.

Certification requirements vary by country, but they typically include:

• A formal education programme, often at university level or equivalent

• Written and oral exams covering local history, art, architecture, and heritage

• A government-issued or association-issued license or membership card

• Ongoing professional development to maintain certification status

This is different from being a good storyteller or a knowledgeable local. Certified guides are trained professionals accountable to their national or regional tourism authority.

How we verify guides on Keyguides Connect

Every guide must have their certification confirmed before their profile goes live -- either through an official guide association that has verified their members, or by submitting their certification credentials directly to us for review.

If a guide's certification cannot be confirmed, they are not listed on the platform.

Partnership verification

In addition to direct certification checks, Keyguides Connect works with official guide associations to verify members at scale.

In Spain, all guides on the platform are verified through CEFAPIT — the federation of regional certified tourist guide associations across Spain. CEFAPIT members hold proper professional education and a recognised guide license. The president of CEFAPIT has officially endorsed Keyguides Connect to its member associations, which means every Spanish guide on the platform carries the full backing of the national federation. The same goes for all guides in Sweden who is verified through SveGuides through our ongoing partnership both national and local through Stockholms Guideforening.

As we grow into new markets, we establish similar verification partnerships with the relevant national or regional guide associations.

What this means for you

When you book a guide through Keyguides Connect, you are booking a credentialed professional — not someone who simply signed up online. The guide you work with has been trained to a recognised standard, is accountable to a professional body, and is legally permitted to guide in the areas they cover.

You do not need to ask for credentials or vet guides yourself. We have already done that.
